I wrap my arms around my stomach, out of the way of the others, as splashing comes from the nearby pond. Solar lights illuminate the clearing, making it easy to see. Jimmy took off as soon as we arrived, gathering with his friends to splash around in the water while I sought out a log to sit on and take everything in.

While I want to enjoy myself, I’m honestly struggling. I don’t know anyone here. They’re all younger wolves who I’ve never met, and even the humans—who I should at the very least have something in common with—are more comfortable with them than with me. I guess humanness doesn’t count when it’s a choice of the kids they live with every day versus a total stranger, and the daughter of a fringe wolf, to boot.

Footsteps crunch behind me, and a moment later, Neil settles down on the log next to me. He holds two plates in one hand and bottles of water under his arm. “And here we are, the promised sustenance.”

As I take one of the plates and waters from him, my stomach lets out a loud growl at the smell of hamburgers and chips.

Neil laughs. “Should I have grabbed you two burgers? One for you and one for the beast that lives in your stomach?”

Embarrassed heat floods my cheeks, and I thank anyone who’s listening for the shadows that hide my blush. “One’s good.”

“Well, just let me know if you change your mind, and I’ll grab you another.” He lifts his burger and holds it out. “Cheers.”

Laughing, I lift mine and bump it against his. “Cheers.”

We eat in companionable silence, Neil finishing his burger in four bites while I eat at a more reasonable pace. Around us, the sound of the others’ laughter fills the air, and guilt pricks at me.

I peek at Neil from the corner of my eye. “You sure you don’t want to go swimming?”

He shakes his head adamantly. “No way.”

I lower my plate to my lap. “Just because I didn’t bring a swimsuit doesn’t mean you have to babysit me.”

He leans over to bump his shoulder against mine. “There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.” When I turn my head to give him a doubtful look, he sighs. “Fine. You dragged it out of me.”

My eyebrows shoot up. “Wow, I’m a good interrogator.”

He mock-scowls at me. “Hush, or I won’t tell you my deep, dark secret.”

I mime zipping my lips.

Slowly, Neil leans closer until his breath flutters against my ear. “I can’t swim.”

I blink in shock, then turn my head to stare at him. “Seriously?”

“Seriously.” He nods, his nose bumping against mine, and I suddenly realize how close we are and that my breath probably smells like onions.

“Wow.” I back away with a nervous laugh. “That’s a big secret. Are you sure you can trust me with it?”

He purses his lips, drawing my eyes to them, and that flutter from earlier surges back to life. “Now that you mention it, I’m going to need some blackmail.
